From Pain to Power

The Brave Journey of Zainab ‘Zai’ Jama

Zainab Jama, known as Zai Jama, is a 23-year-old humanitarian and model who currently holds the title of Miss World Somalia 2025. Born and raised in Mogadishu, Somalia, she pursued a degree in aviation and airport management, showcasing her commitment to areas where women are often underrepresented in her community.

Recently, Zai showed remarkable courage by sharing her experience on social media of undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM) at the age of seven. She recounted being kidnapped and taken to a room, where three untrained women stripped her and subjected her to the horrific procedure without any medical care or anesthesia. As they removed her clitoris, a crucial part of her identity, she experienced immense pain. Following the procedure, she spent several days alone, bleeding in a dark room. Although this traumatic experience was devastating, it became a significant turning point in her life, motivating her to become a strong advocate for women's rights, particularly against FGM and violence toward girls.

Alongside her modeling and academic pursuits, Zainab is deeply dedicated to humanitarian initiatives. She founded the Female Initiative Foundation, aimed at empowering young girls through education. Through her advocacy, she actively campaigns against FGM and works to safeguard girls from this harmful practice.

Zainab began her pageantry journey by competing in Miss Global 2023 in Vietnam, where she earned a place among the Top 13. Her achievement as Miss World Somalia 2025 marked a pivotal moment in her pageant career. She is set to participate in the 72nd Miss World competition in Hyderabad, India.
